The Chennai-Salem expressway is back on track with the green signal coming from the Supreme Court. The ruling paves the way for constructing the 274 km-long, eight-lane access controlled Greenfield project that would pass through some of the crucial districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Kanchipuram, where the industrial hub of Oragadam is located, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri to connect to Salem.
Once established, the stretch would not only upgrade the connectivity network between Chennai and Salem but would also open up new employment opportunities in the region.
All about the expressway
A part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana project, Chennai-Salem Expressway entails the development of five critical sections – Tambaram and Harur Section (NH-179B), Harur to Salem Section (NH-179A), Chengalpattu to Kancheepuram Section via Oragadam (NH-132B), Semmampadi to Chetpet Section (HN-179D) and Polur to Tiruvannamalai Section (NH-38).
The objective of the project
The primary purpose of the proposed high-speed connectivity corridor is to link the existing industrial areas and the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in Chennai and Salem. Oragadam in Chennai is the ‘Detroit of India’ owing to the presence of more than one-third of India’s automobile industry whereas Salem is the textile hub in Tamil Nadu with nearly 125 spinning mills and weaving and garment units. Besides, it is also home to numerous other manufacturing units such as Sago and Salem steel plant, a subsidiary of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
The corridor is expected to reduce the traveling time between Chennai and Salem by 2.5 to three hours from the current 5-6 hours. The significant reduction in the traveling time would benefit the traders and also rev up the tourism sector.
Besides, amplified connectivity to other places of importance via links at Kanchipuram-Oragadam-Chengalpattu, Chetpet, and Tiruvannamalai would also be a major plus.

The corridor will further boost connectivity to Oragadam. With amazing road and rail connectivity, more and more people are shifting to this locality. The increasing number of companies being established here and the growing workforce has brought about a demand for housing.
