The spotlight is on Sriperumbudur. It has emerged once again as the strongest contender for the planned second airport that will be required after the terminals at the existing airport hits saturation point.
The interest in Sriperumbudur as the site for a greenfield airport has revived after a promoter offered 2000 acres of a land parcel.
“Technically, we are looking at about 2,000 acres too. But we will get a clear picture only if these promoters come forward when the expression of interest is called for by the government,” an official of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) told The Hindu.
The newspaper also reported that AAI Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra visited the city and reviewed the progress of phase II modernisation of the airport, which includes a new integrated terminal, a multi-level car parking lot and several other air-side developmental works.
The integrated terminals slated to be completed by September 2021 will hit saturation levels in 4-5 years, after which there will be a need for the second airport.
Sriperumbudur is just 40 kilometers from Chennai and comes within the Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is the birthplace of Sri Ramanuja, one of the most prominent Hindu Vaishnava saints. Sriperumbudur is the industrial hub of Tamil Nadu and has attracted mega investments thanks to its proximity to Chennai port, strategic location on the Chennai-Bangalore highway, infrastructure development, Software Technology Parks, availability of quality workforce and of course world class residential projects like Hiranandani Parks.
Hyundai was among the first to invest in Sriperumbudur. The rest is history. Today, Sriperumbudur is a Special Economic Zone attracting investments worth over US $2 billion primarily in the automotive and electronics sectors.
The Industrial corridor between Sriperumbudur and Oragadam is rapidly growing. It is also home to the first satellite township in Chennai.
